Fitting knees – small boat as with most boat building, it is not a simple union, usually having to match the curve of the hull and fit around other structural items like the gunwale and plank lands etc. demonstrated in this skill is a simple process to get this right.. This video shows me making stringers and knees from xps (extruded polystyrene) for my boat. this is the first segment of the build, and it includes how i found dead center, made a line drawing. The knees, combined with the thwarts make the hull much more stiff than it would be otherwise, and much stronger as well. the thwarts and knees also keep the hull from getting wider with use, so the boat will still measure according to the design..
